On May 22, 2026, in Ashgabat, at the invitation of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a delegation of the SCO Secretariat took part in an expanded-format meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government.

On the sidelines of the events, a series of contacts took place between Deputy Secretary-General of the SCO Oleg Kopylov and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Sergey Lebedev, as well as a number of other senior officials of the CIS Secretariat and high-ranking representatives of delegations from member states. During these contacts, the parties discussed issues of enhancing practical cooperation between the two organizations, as well as the implementation of the provisions of the Roadmap for the development of cooperation between the SCO, CSTO, and CIS through the implementation of joint measures in key areas outlined in the document.

By the decision of the CIS Council of Heads of State (Dushanbe, October 10, 2025), the SCO was granted observer status at the Commonwealth.
