On 8 December 2025, at the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Beijing, Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev held a meeting with the European Union Special Representative for Central Asia, Eduards Stiprais.
The EU Representative highly commended the SCO's efforts in developing multifaceted cooperation. He informed about his institution's engagement with the countries of the region in implementing the EU's new strategy emphasising the intention of EU Member States to fully support the efforts of Central Asian states to create conditions for genuine good-neighbourliness and mutual support.
On the Meeting of the Secretary-General with the Special Representative of the European Union
The SCO Secretary-General spoke about the Organisation's activities highlighting that the Tianjin Declaration of the Council of Heads of Member States reaffirmed the role of Central Asia as the core of the SCO. He also noted that the Organisation supports the efforts of its Member States including those in Central Asia aimed at ensuring peace, security, and stability, as well as developing cooperation in trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres within their countries and across the region as a whole.
The Secretary-General also provided information on the key outcomes of the Tianjin Summit and the ongoing work to improve the Organisation.
An agreement was reached to maintain working contacts between the executive bodies of the SCO and the EU.
