On September 24, 2025, in New York, USA, within the framework of participation in the High-Level Week of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Nurlan Yermekbayev, held a meeting with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua.
N. Yermekbayev informed his counterpart about the decisions and outcome documents of socio-economic orientation adopted at the Tianjin SCO Summit, as well as the work of the Organization’s specialized cooperation mechanisms. He proposed making use of the expertise and competencies of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in the implementation of a number of practically significant projects and initiatives.
Li Junhua highly appreciated the important outcomes of the SCO Summit and expressed readiness to establish practice-oriented cooperation with the Organization in areas of mutual interest.
In particular, an agreement was reached to hold consultations in the near future between the SCO Secretariat and UN DESA.
The meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere.
