On September 23, 2025, in New York, USA, as part of the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Nurlan Yermekbayev held a meeting with Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Qu Dongyu.
During the conversation, the Secretary General stressed that the issues of developing cooperation in the field of agriculture and food security occupy an important place on the SCO agenda. He informed the interlocutor about the activities within the framework of the Organization of relevant cooperation mechanisms - the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Member States and the permanent specialized expert working group.
SCO Secretary General Meets with FAO Director-General
An exchange of views took place on ways to enhance cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and the FAO within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding dated 2024. In this regard, special attention was paid to the possibility of implementing joint activities and projects with a practical focus.
Qu Dongyu noted the positive attitude of FAO towards strengthening mutually beneficial relations with the SCO member States and its Secretariat in the fields of food security and ecology, with a special focus on water conservation and water resources management.
The meeting was held in a constructive atmosphere.
