On May 17, 2025 in Tehran during the official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Nurlan Ermekbayev had a conversation with the country's Minister of Energy Abbas Ali-Abadi.
The parties discussed the status and prospects for strengthening cooperation within the SCO in the energy sector, including the use of advanced technologies. Particular attention was paid to the expansion of ties in terms of the use of renewable and low-carbon energy sources, development and implementation of innovations.

In this context, the Secretary-General mentioned the importance of practical implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Energy Cooperation of the SCO Member States for the period until 2030, adopted at last year's Astana Summit of the Organization.
For his part, Abbas Ali-Abadi stressed readiness to cooperate in using the energy potential of Iran and other member states to strengthen energy security in the Organization's space through the implementation of joint projects.

The sides discussed ways to implement Iran's proposals in the energy sector in the context of the upcoming meeting of the SCO energy ministers this year.
On the same day, the SCO Secretary-General met with Abdol-Rasoul Mohaajer, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Foreign Economic Relations.

The interlocutors exchanged views on ways to deepen cooperation within the Organization ahead of the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO member states, which will be held this year in Tianjin, China.
Nurlan Yermekbayev, noting Iran's significant contribution to the work of the SCO, including the topic of comprehensive modernization of its activities, stressed the need for a more comprehensive implementation of initiatives and decisions of the heads of state, to increase the effectiveness of activities carried out within the framework of the Organization.
