On 5 March 2025, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Nurlan Yermekbayev met with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent during the Secretary General's official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The discussion focused on a wide range of issues related to intensifying practical cooperation within the SCO, including the active joint work of the member states during China's presidency of the Organisation, the implementation of initiatives proposed by Uzbekistan, and current regional and international issues.

The President of Uzbekistan congratulated Nurlan Yermekbayev on his recent appointment to the post of the Organisation's Secretary-General. Mr Mirziyoyev noted the dynamic development of multifaceted interaction within the SCO, emphasising that his country attaches great importance to its participation in this process. He reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s readiness to continue contributing to multilateral cooperation within the SCO based on the principles of the Shanghai spirit, taking into account the complex and rapidly changing situation in the world.

In response, the Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to Mr Mirziyoyev for the warm welcome and meaningful discussion. He recognised the impressive pace of development in modern Uzbekistan under the leadership of the President and the Government, and acknowledged Uzbekistan's valuable contribution to advancing SCO cooperation. Mr Yermekbayev assured that the SCO Secretariat is committed to enhancing the practical impact of the Organisation's activities and strengthening its potential for the benefit of the SCO member states.
