On 21 January 2025, SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev had a meeting in Beijing with Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alibek Bakayev.
The officials discussed the implementation of decisions adopted by the Astana SCO Summit in 2024, preparations for events in the context of China’s current SCO presidency, and certain aspects of interaction. They also focused on how to make the work done by the SCO’s mechanisms and bodies more effective and productive.

The Secretary-General informed Mr Bakayev of his priorities as the head of the SCO’s main standing body, noting that the Secretariat would continue its active involvement in the effort to improve the Organisation’s performance. It would also make proposals to that effect.
Mr Bakayev assured the Secretary-General that Kazakhstan was committed to rendering the SCO Secretariat maximum assistance in addressing the comprehensive challenges that it was facing.
