On 22 September 2024, the Summit of the Future, themed Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow, opened in New York City ahead of the 79th UN General Assembly Session.
In his remarks, SCO Deputy Secretary-General Nuran Niyazaliyev emphasised common SCO and UN goals and principles and reaffirmed a commitment to work jointly for the sake of a worthy, peaceful and equitable future. Nuran Niyazaliyev noted that SCO member states led the way in promoting global issues of the sustainable development agenda. For example, the SCO has proclaimed 2025 the Year of Sustainable Development.
He noted that joint efforts to forge a more inclusive, democratic, equitable and multipolar world order were the best response to contemporary challenges. This world order should hinge on the principles of international law, with the UN playing a central coordinating role. The SCO is calling for an honest, open and direct dialogue and for pooling efforts in order to effectively cope with common challenges and threats.
The head of the SCO delegation urged the international community to join the SCO Initiative on World Unity for a Just Peace, Harmony and Development, approved at the SCO Summit in Astana in July 2024. This initiative highlights a contribution of SCO countries to the work of the Summit of the Future.
