On 18 March 2024, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming concluded the SCO Mission’s observation of the Russian presidential election and met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The officials exchanged insights on pressing matters concerning SCO activities and the development of multilateral cooperation across various areas such as politics, diplomacy, trade, economics, culture, and humanitarian affairs within the organisation. They agreed to maintain communication channels, including through engagement with the Russian Embassy in China, to facilitate preparations for upcoming meetings of the SCO Foreign Ministers Council and the SCO Heads of State Council scheduled to take place in the Republic of Kazakhstan in May and July 2024.
During their conversation, Sergei Lavrov noted the significance Russia places on the SCO’s role in monitoring Russia’s pivotal political event, the presidential election. The minister emphasised the SCO’s importance as a cornerstone of cooperation on security matters.
The SCO Secretary General underscored the significance of the invitation extended by Russia’s Foreign Ministry and the Central Election Commission to the SCO to observe the presidential election process. He said this gesture was a great honour and an important indication of Moscow’s commitment to fostering an open and democratic electoral process.
Zhang Ming also commended the effective efforts and proactive engagement of the SCO member states, including Russia, across various spheres aimed at promoting peace and stability amidst challenging geopolitical circumstances.
