On 20 September 2023, SCO Deputy Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev addressed the participants in the opening ceremony of the First CIS Conference on Combating Terrorism and Extremism in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.
In his address, Nurlan Yermekbayev noted the importance of stepping up the joint efforts of the international community to counter the activities of terrorist, separatist and extremist groups, and reaffirmed the determination of the SCO member states to further strengthen multilateral security cooperation, enhance coordination at the global, regional and national levels, and insist on maintaining equal, indivisible, comprehensive and sustainable security.
During the event, the delegates exchanged their countries’ experience in countering terrorism and extremism and discussed the state of scientific support for these activities and international counter-terrorism cooperation.
At the end of the conference, the participants adopted a Final Document in which they reaffirmed their strong commitment to further develop and strengthen multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation under the central coordinating role of the United Nations and in cooperation with the SCO, the CIS, the CSTO, the CICA and the CARICC.
The first Commonwealth of Independent States conference on combating terrorism and extremism was held at the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic. It was attended by the heads and representatives of the competent authorities of the CIS member states, the SCO member states, the working agencies of ten statutory and sectoral CIS bodies, as well as the executive bodies of eight international organisations.
