The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated today on May 21. The United Nations General Assembly first declared this Day of Cultural Diversity in 2002, following the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) adoption of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001. In this regard, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Vladimir Norov called for the protection of the world's cultural diversity that promotes dialogue and cooperation between countries and peoples.
"We need to raise our numerous voices in protection of the importance of the cultural diversity for the sake of dialogue and development. This is the best response and moral support in the fight against most dangerous enemies of humanity, including the COVID-19 pandemic," Norov stated. SCO chief Norov says that the events held on this day are aimed at promoting the major significance and value of the cultural diversity and rich civilizational legacy of the mankind.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation is one of the most important directions of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
"Recognizing the necessity to strengthen the potential of culture, our organization makes a significant contribution on a yearly basis to supporting the cultural diversity by ensuring prosperity, sustainable development and global peaceful coexistence," Norov noted.
