On 5 February 2020 in Baku, SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sherali Jonon, who is the head of the SCO Observer Mission monitoring the pre-term parliamentary elections in the Republic of Azerbaijan, met with Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov.
The minister thanked the SCO Observer Mission for participating in the monitoring and assured that the country's foreign ministry will do everything it can to create favourable conditions for effectively monitoring the elections.
Elmar Mammadyarov noted the SCO's growing authority in regional affairs and on the international arena, as well as the dynamic development of the economic and humanitarian cooperation within the Organisation.
The SCO Deputy Secretary-General stated that monitoring presidential and parliamentary elections is one of the Organisation's priorities. As part of the ongoing 51st Observer Mission, the preparations started on 3 February 2020 that will cover a substantial part of Azerbaijan's territory. A detailed parliamentary election monitoring concept has been circulated among the Mission participants. The Mission headquarters is operating.
Sherali Jonon thanked the foreign minister for the active participation and assistance of the employees working at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Beijing and the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's central office in accomplishing the Mission's goals. He expressed confidence in the fact that the election results will contribute to intensifying the multidimensional cooperation between the states of the SCO family.
