On 3 February 2020, at the invitation of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry, an SCO Observer Mission started monitoring the preparations for and holding of a snap parliamentary election to be held in Azerbaijan on 9 February 2020.
The Mission is headed by SCO Deputy Secretary-General Sherali Saidamir Jonon.
The Mission includes representatives of SCO member-states' legislative, executive and election authorities as well as SCO Secretariat officials.
The Mission members will launch monitoring in Azerbaijan capital Baku, in the populated areas of the Apsheron Peninsula, and in the cities of Sumqayit and Sirvan as well as in the adjacent areas.
The Mission will focus on checking the readiness of polling stations, monitoring the voting, and the organisation of the election campaign as well as exit polls and surveys among the candidates' representatives and other observers.
The SCO Mission will operate in Azerbaijan from 3 to 10 February 2020 as per the Regulations on the SCO Observer Mission at Presidential and/or Parliamentary Elections and Referendums.
