SCO Secretary-General meets with Chief Executive of Afghanistan

On 1 November 2019 in Tashkent, SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov met with Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah, during the SCO Heads of Government Council Meeting.

Vladimir Norov stressed that Afghanistan is constantly at the centre of the Organisation's attention as an SCO observer state and a member of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group.

"At the SCO Summit in Bishkek, participants approved a roadmap of further action for the Contact Group, including the development of common measures for containing potential terrorist threats against SCO member states, increasing the potential of officers from Afghanistan's competent authorities in combating illegal drug trafficking as well as assisting with joint infrastructure projects," Vladimir Norov added.

The Secretary-General noted that engaging Afghanistan in the development of regional transport arteries could be an important factor in stabilising the situation in the country. "Implementing projects in this area will give a substantial boost to the export potential of the Afghan economy and will amplify the revenue of local companies," Vladimir Norov emphasised.

Abdullah Abdullah noted the SCO's significant role in ensuring stability and security in the region. He pointed out that the SCO's concern for Afghanistan is making a considerable contribution to ensuring security and stability in the country as well as to accelerating economic development.

The parties exchanged opinions on the further strengthening of cooperation within the respective SCO mechanisms, and developing dialogue with other international and regional organisations in order to stabilise the general situation and to promote the development of Afghanistan.

The meeting was held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.
