On 11 October 2019, SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov had a meeting, at the SCO Secretariat, with the head of the Mission of the League of Arab States in China Mahmoud Hassan Elamin, and Ambassador of the Lebanese Republic to China Milia Jabbour.
Mr Elamin praised the SCO's role in maintaining regional security and expressed the opinion that there was a general understanding of the possibility of interaction between organisations, particularly in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
Ms Jabbour noted that it had only taken the SCO a brief period of time, a mere 18 years, to develop from a regional to a global organisation. She stressed that countries in both regions shared common values and goals, something that created opportunities for cooperation.
Mr Norov informed the officials about the SCO's current activities, stressing that security in the SCO space was the organisation's priority. The Tashkent-based Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure is charged with a mission to coordinate these activities.
He dwelled upon the procedure for accession to the SCO and the nature of its interaction with observer countries and dialogue partners as well as with regional and international organisations.
The possibility of the SCO Secretary-General having a meeting with the ambassadors of the member-states of the Arab League to China was also discussed.
The meeting was held in a constructive atmosphere.
The League of Arab States is a regional intergovernmental organisation established in Cairo, Egypt, on 22 March 1945.
Its aim is to strengthen ties and comprehensive cooperation between the member states.
