On 26 September, SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly and was the first ever meeting between the leaders of the two organisations.
The SCO Secretary-General informed his counterpart about the SCO's current activities. He drew attention to its vast experience in responding to the challenges and threats to the security and stability of its member states, above all through its Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure, which could prove useful to the Arab League states.
Mr Norov also dwelt on the procedure for granting SCO membership, and the nature of the SCO's interaction with observer states and dialogue partners, as well as with international and regional organisations.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed interest in developing dialogue between the SCO and LAS, including by formalising their relations. He pointed out the possibility of coordinating interaction in combatting terrorism and illegal drugs trafficking, in cybersecurity, the development of transport logistic facilities and contacts beween youth organisations.
The meeting was held in a businesslike and constructive spirit. The Secretaries-General have agreed to continue their working contacts.
