On 17 January 2025 in Beijing, a ceremonial reception was held to commemorate the assumption of office by Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Nurlan Yermekbayev.

The event was attended by heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Beijing, senior officials from Chinese state and public institutions, as well as representatives of media and expert circles from across the SCO family of nations.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General delineated the Secretariat’s priority tasks, including providing comprehensive support to China’s ongoing SCO presidency, ensuring the effective functioning of operational mechanisms to serve the interests of member states, and enhancing the efficiency and practical impact of adopted decisions.

Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Liu Bin delivered remarks to the guests. He emphasised China’s readiness to extend full assistance to the SCO Secretary-General in the discharge of his duties.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, the Secretary-General convened a meeting with the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of China. The parties engaged in substantive discussions regarding prospects for cooperation in the context of refining the SCO’s activities, preparations for the Meeting of the Council of Heads of State under China’s presidency, and other pivotal initiatives within the Organisation’s agenda.
