On 9 September 2024, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Zhang Ming, took part in a briefing with China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Sun Weidong to discuss the country’s SCO chairmanship in 2024-2025. Other attendees included high-ranking representatives of the diplomatic corps from SCO Family states, media employees and other invited guests.

The Chinese side provided a detailed insight into the priorities of its 2024-2025 chairmanship and set forth strategic aspects of current and future work in the field of politics, security and the economy, cultural, humanitarian and other high-priority aspects of SCO activities, including preparations for the 25th SCO Heads of State Council meeting, the drafting of the summit’s declaration and the long-term SCO development strategy, the implementation of the SCO Sustainable Development Year’s action plan, as well as institutional reforms under the motto Promoting the Shanghai Spirit: The SCO in Action.

The SCO Secretary-General, the leadership of the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the diplomatic corps exchanged opinions in great detail on the sidelines of the meeting. Several media outlets also interviewed him. Zhang Ming praised the Chinese side’s substantive and result-oriented action plan, part of its SCO chairmanship. He assured those present that the SCO Secretariat would provide maximum support to Chinese efforts and work methodically to address tasks of elevating intra-SCO cooperation to a new level.
