On 20 May, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming who arrived in Astana for the SCO Foreign Ministers Council meeting, visited the headquarters of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and met with its Secretary General Kairat Sarybay.
During the discussion, the officials focused on intensifying cooperation between the two organisations under the current memorandum of understanding on ensuring regional security, countering drug trafficking and promoting humanitarian ties.

    Zhang Ming informed Mr Sarybai about the preparations for the forthcoming meeting of the SCO Foreign Ministers Council and a SCO summit chaired by the Republic of Kazakhstan, and described these events as an important historical landmark in the SCO’s development.
    In turn, Mr Sarybay shared with Zhang Ming the prospects of transforming CICA and expressed readiness to step up cooperation.
    During the conversation, Zhang Ming and Kairat Sarybay expressed condolences to the people and Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran over the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and members of the government delegation in a helicopter crash in the province of East Azerbaijan.
    The SCO and CICA secretariats have been effectively implementing their Memorandum of Understanding for a decade.
