Kunming hosted a large-scale cultural and sports festival in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding. The results of the half-marathon and the marathon, the main parts of the event, were also summed up.
The race involved over 20,000 people from 51 countries from all continents.
Ethiopian representatives placed first, second and third in the marathon event. Belay Olkeba Jene took first place, with 2:20:49, followed by Chala Bekele Bega with 2:20:56 and Tele Hagos Gebremeskel with 2:21:08.
Representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya and Kyrgyzstan won the first, second and third places in the women's marathon race. Ethiopian athlete Getiso Tsehay Gebre finished first with 2:35:00, followed by Kenyan female runner Roda Jepkorir Tanyi with 2:39:57. Darya Maslova from Kyrgyzstan took the third place with 2:21:08.
Representatives from Kenya and Uganda placed first, second and third in the men's half-marathon race. Kenya's Evans Nayakamba Mayaka got the first place with 1:05:36, followed by Wilson Cheruiyot with 1:06:09. Uganda's John Katereggi clocked in with 1:06:26 which put him in third place.
Representatives from Mongolia, China and Kenya won first, second and third places in the women's half-marathon race. Mongolia's Bayartsogt Munkhazaya came first with 1:16:47, followed by China's Zhang Deshun with 1:16:55. Kenyan runner Mercy Wanjiku Njoroge came third with 1:17:52.
The atmosphere was festive when the winners received unique custom-made medals, manufactured for the winners of the SCO 2018 Marathon in Kunming, as well as cash vouchers.
The SCO 2018 Marathon became the largest such event of the past three years. Its programme also included cultural events, performances given by musical groups and dance ensembles representing the unique culture of the Yunnan Province's ethnic groups.
The event's programme will culminate in an official reception for the Marathon's participants and guests on behalf of SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov.
