SCO and Red Cross to develop cooperation

On 31 May 2018, the SCO Headquarters in Beijing hosted a meeting between the SCO Secretary-General and International Committee of the Red Cross President Peter Maurer.

"We respect the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which proves through its actions that it is an independent and neutral organisation, supports the rule of law, and provides humanitarian protection. We are ready to cooperate with the Red Cross under the existing SCO-ICRC Memorandum," Rashid Alimov said.

The parties held a useful exchange of views on areas of cooperation of mutual interest, based on the Memorandum of Understanding between the Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the International Committee of the Red Cross that was signed on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Astana last June.

The International Committee of the Red Cross is an independent organisation focused on providing protection and aid to victims of armed conflicts and clashes. It was established in 1863. The ICRC Headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.
