On 9 April 2018, SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov met with Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov.
The Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude to the SCO Secretary-General for the decision to head the Observer Mission, as well as for the SCO's contribution to the international monitoring of the presidential election in Azerbaijan.
"We very much appreciate our interaction with the SCO and attach great importance to the development and strengthening of cooperation with the Organisation," Mr Mammadyarov said.
Rashid Alimov thanked the Foreign Minister for the invitation to have the SCO Observer Mission monitor the most important event in the political and public life of the Republic of Azerbaijan — the presidential election and emphasised his willingness to provide impartial and objective observation of the election in Azerbaijan.
"The presidential election is the most important event in the life of a country and society. We proceed from the fact that elections are held for citizens, for their free expression of will, an informed choice on how to develop their state. At the same time, the task of international observers is an objective, unbiased observation of the election process," the SCO Secretary-General said.
The parties discussed a range of issues dealing with cooperation between the SCO and Azerbaijan as a Dialogue Partner of the Organisation, as well as Azerbaijan's participation in activities at the SCO Headquarters in Beijing.
Mr Alimov and Mr Mammadyarov also exchanged views on current issues on the regional agenda.
