On 5-6 February 2018, SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov paid an official visit to Islamabad on the invitation of the Pakistani Foreign Minister.
Today the working programme of the visit began with Mr Alimov's meeting with Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Abbasi in the government residence.
During the meeting, the officials discussed key items on the SCO agenda and further development of the versatile mutually beneficial cooperation in the association.
Mr Alimov described in detail the current work of the SCO, including the preparations for the main annual event — the SCO Summit — that will take place in the seaside city of Qingdao under China's presidency in June. The Secretary-General emphasised Pakistan's potential and opportunities for upgrading SCO cooperation, notably, in ensuring regional security and stability and developing trade and economic cooperation, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties.
Mr Abbasi accentuated the importance that Pakistan gives to the development of SCO cooperation, laying emphasis on Islamabad's striving to take an active part in joint work in all areas. In this context, the Prime Minister paid special attention to such areas as the efforts to enhance security, jointly counter international terrorism, extremism and illegal drug trade, and develop transport and economic contacts of the SCO countries.
The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
