On 17 December 2017, the official presentation of the Second SCO International Marathon was held in the editorial offices of the newspaper China Daily in Beijing. The marathon will be held in Kunming on 31 December 2017.
The presentation ceremony was streamed on the website of China's most popular newspaper.
SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov addressed the newspaper's millions of readers saying this was the second time that Kunming, known as the City of Eternal Spring, would host the SCO International Marathon. "Exactly a year ago, the hospitable city of Kunming welcomed 16,000 athletes from 23 countries. On that sunny day, the participants of the first SCO marathon could sense the power and energy of the sporting spirit merging with the creative energy of the Shanghai Spirit," Rashid Alimov said.
"This summer, Astana took the relay baton from the Kunming Marathon. The Astana Marathon was held as part of SCO Day at the International Specialised Exhibition EXPO-2017. With over 6,000 athletes and amateur runners from 32 countries, the Astana Marathon became the largest and most spectacular event at the exhibition," the SCO Secretary-General said.
He said the upcoming Kunming Marathon was a unique event that would rally participants around simple notions that are held dear by people around the world, such as sport and friendship, the dialogue of cultures and tolerance, as well as mutual understanding, cooperation and development. But the most important value is peace, of course.
"There will be both famous athletes and novices, young people and seniors, amateur runners and people with disabilities from different nations, traditions and cultures. They will be united by their love of healthy living and fitness of body and spirit. I am sure that on 31 December 2017 we will witness the triumph of the human spirit," Rashid Alimov said.
Other speakers at the ceremony were Deputy Secretary-General of the Yunnan Provincial Government Zhao Ruijun, deputy director of the Athletics Centre of the State General Sports Administration of China, deputy CEO of the Yunnan Energy Investment Co Ltd, as well as CEO of Kunming Yunnei Power.
Ceremony participants watched a video about the SCO Kunming Marathon and attended the presentation of T-shirts and medals for the upcoming marathon.
The ceremony was attended by officials from the Foreign Ministry of China, permanent representatives from the SCO member states at the SCO Secretariat, high-ranking diplomats from the embassies of the SCO Family states, representatives from Kunming City Hall and the Yunnan Province Sports Administration, and culture and sports personalities, as well as the media.
