SCO Secretary-General and UNODC Executive Director discuss 2018 cooperation plans in Moscow

On 4 December 2017, SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov met with UN Deputy Secretary-General and UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov on the sidelines of the international conference Parliamentarians Against Drugs.

The officials noted considerably intensified cooperation between the SCO and UNODC in 2017, and a rise in effective teamwork in countering illegal drug trade.

In this context, the SCO Secretary-General noted with satisfaction that "2017 was a productive year in implementing the items of the 2011 Memorandum of Understanding between the SCO Secretariat and UNODC. Our first special joint event took place on the sidelines of the CND 60th anniversary session. This event was welcomed by the leaders of SCO member states in the Astana Declaration of 9 June 2017."

During their conversation, the officials had a detailed discussion of further developing cooperation between the SCO and UNODC, implementing joint projects and plans with the aim of supporting international activities in confronting the drug threat.

"We highly appreciate our cooperation with the SCO and can see its progress. We are prepared to increase effective cooperation against drug trafficking," Mr Fedotov said.

Cooperation between the SCO and UNODC has been developing since 2011, on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding between the SCO Secretariat and UNODC. Joint analytical and information work is carried out, and joint events are held to develop cooperation in combatting drugs. SCO experts are involved in all UNODC events relevant to SCO areas of activity in drug control, including meetings with Paris Pact Initiative expert groups.
