SCO and UN to step up cooperation in preventive diplomacy

On 20 November 2017, SCO Deputy Secretary-General Wang Kaiwen met with Special Representative of UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Natalia Gherman at SCO headquarters in Beijing.

SCO Deputy Secretary-General Wang Kaiwen congratulated Ms Gherman on being appointed Head of UNRCCA and on the 10th anniversary of establishing the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. He expressed hope that "UNRCCA would continue making every effort to strengthen cooperation in central Asia and secure regional stability."

Natalia Gherman shared UNRCCA plans and prospects with Wang Kaiwen. "Given that the UN and SCO are two major international organisations in the region and two key partners, we deem it necessary to strengthen the efforts of the UNRCCA and the SCO in promoting regional stability," she said. Wang Kaiwen assured the UN Special Representative that "the SCO would step up cooperation with the UN and its specialised institutions in various areas of mutual interest."

The head of the UN Regional Centre handed over an invitation addressed to the SCO Secretary-General to take part in events dedicated to the 10th anniversary of establishing the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, which Wang Kaiwen accepted with gratitude.

The conversation was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
