On 11 November 2017, SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov congratulated Audrey Azoulay on her election as UNESCO Director-General. The message reads, in part:
"It is a great honour and privilege to congratulate you on your appointment to the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
Your career and rich experience are evidence of your capability to find acceptable solutions to current and potential challenges.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation highly values its cooperation with UNESCO and its unique contribution to the coordination of international cooperation in education, science, culture and communications. UNESCO also makes an invaluable contribution to the development of close civilisational contacts between peoples.
I wish you success in this extremely important position."
The SCO Secretary-General invited Audrey Azoulay to visit the SCO Secretariat in Beijing at her convenience.
On 10 November 2017, the General Conference of UNESCO appointed Audrey Azoulay (France) to the post of Director-General of the Organisation. UNESCO's Executive Board nominated Ms Azoulay for this position on 13 October.
Ms Azoulay is the 11th UNESCO Director-General and the second woman to occupy the position. On 15 November she will take the place of outgoing Director-General Irina Bokova (Bulgaria).
