SCO Pavilion at EXPO 2017 receives first visitors

SCO Pavilion at EXPO 2017

On 10 June 2017, EXPO 2017 in Astana hosted an opening ceremony for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's pavilion.

Addressing those present, SCO Secretary-General said that "the SCO member states are united by the Shanghai Spirit of which the principles are accepted and understood by millions of people living within the SCO space. Energy of the Future is the motto of EXPO Astana; Energy of the Shanghai Spirit is the motto of the SCO Pavilion. Both share the same roots, both are forward-looking, and their synergy will help make life better, more stable, and safer within the SCO and across the world."

Rashid Alimov thanked President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev for inviting the SCO to the EXPO and the exhibition management for helping them in so many ways with the pavilion.

He told the guests that the SCO had planned a number of official, cultural and themed events as part of EXPO 2017, including SCO Day and International Marathon to be held on 27 August 2017, as well as weeks of joint innovations and green economy, women and children, national days of SCO member states, forums and symposiums.

The first visitors were keen to familiarise themselves with the history of the SCO, historical interconnection and prospects for joint development of SCO countries and peoples. A huge drum-shaped personification of the Shanghai Spirit, the focal point of the entire display, was particularly popular. It is a copy of the copper-and-bronze sculpture by well-known Chinese sculptor Yuan Xikun which graces the SCO Headquarters in Beijing. "Those touching the drum will be filled with the powerful energy of the Shanghai Spirit," Mr Alimov said.

The guests were shown a short video about the history of the Shanghai Spirit, which captivated them with its dynamism and those present were filled with positive emotions.

The opening ceremony was attended by SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov, PRC Government representative at EXPO 2017 and Commissioner General of the Chinese International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing Wang Jinzhen, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to the PRC Shakhrat Nuryshev, Russian Ambassador in Kazakhstan Mikhail Bocharnikov, business and media representatives, and officials from the SCO Secretariat.

In August 2016, the SCO was invited by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the person of the EXPO 2017 Commissioner General to take part in the International Specialised Exhibition. Located next to the pavilions of China, India, Malaysia and Algeria, the SCO Pavilion will be open to visitors until 10 September 2017.
