On 19 April 2017, Astana hosted a briefing dedicated to the results of the SCO For a World Without Drugs International Anti-Drug Campaign.
The speakers included SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov and Sultan Kussetov, head of the Counterdrug and Drug Trafficking Control Department at the Interior Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
"The SCO International Anti-Drug Campaign is kicking off in Astana and all regions of Kazakhstan. The campaign is aimed at promoting solidarity and unity of the six states as they oppose drug addiction and drug trafficking," Mr Kussetov said in his opening remarks at the briefing.
He also said that the "campaign includes a number of events for students at secondary schools, colleges and universities, such as interactive lessons on the hazards and the legal consequences of drug use."
The SCO Secretary-General congratulated his colleagues in Kazakhstan on a successful start of the anti-drug campaign which, he said, "will continue to be pursued in the SCO space." Mr Alimov stressed that there is not a single country that has not felt the impact of the global drug epidemic. "Since its inception, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has defined the fight against drug trafficking as its cooperation priority. Anti-drug cooperation is yielding results that have been praised by the UN," the Secretary-General said.
The briefing was covered by Kazakhstan's news agencies, radio and television outlets.
