On 14 April 2017, the SCO Headquarters hosted a special event titled Astana: the Capital of the SCO Summit and Expo 2017.
Mayor of Astana Asset Issekeshev was the guest of honour at the event.
At the opening of the event, SCO Secretary-General said, "In eight weeks Astana will host an SCO Summit, and the World Expo 2017 will open its doors. Both events have global significance. The SCO will adopt its main political document, the Asana Declaration, and we will witness the accession of two new full members, India and Pakistan. A specialised SCO pavilion will open for the first time ever at the World Expo. These events will be covered by hundreds of journalists and millions of tourists will arrive in Astana, which in a historically brief period has turned into a striking pearl in the necklace of the world's most beautiful capital cities."
In his speech Mayor of Astana Asset Issekeshev said, "The city has undertaken a large-scale upgrade of all engineering, transport, communications and social infrastructure in time for the World Expo 2017. A new airport terminal, the second railway station and two bus stations are under construction, a smart transport system will be introduced, and the security system is expanding."
"We invite all the participants in today's presentation to visit Astana and the World Expo 2017. The theme of Expo 2017 is Future Energy, and during the event Astana will turn into the biggest centre of the world's technological advances, promising innovative ideas as well as new knowledge and scientific discoveries. According to the Expo 2017 National Company, 850,000 visitors from 44 countries have already booked tickets for the Expo. Air Astana offers free flights to the World Expo with the purchase of its air tickets to Astana," Shakhrat Nuryshev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic Kazakhstan to China, said in his address.
The guests viewed a presentation and a video clip with detailed information on World Expo 2017, and took a keen interest in the photo exhibition Astana: the 21st Century.
Taking part in the event were representatives of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, SCO member states' embassies and SCO observer nations accredited in Beijing, as well as journalists.
The event was held as part of the Joint Events Plan of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in China and the SCO Secretariat for Kazakhstan's presidency in the Organisation in 2016-17.
