President of Kazakhstan receives participants of SCO National Security Council Secretaries Meeting

On 6 April 2017, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev received SCO National Security Council secretaries, the SCO Secretary-General and the Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure at the Akorda Presidential Palace.

The meeting was attended by Presidential Aide and Kazakhstan National Security Council Secretary Vladimir Zhumakanov, PRC State Council member Guo Shengkun, Kyrgyzstan National Security Council Secretary Temir Djumakadyrov, Russian National Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Tajikistan National Security Council Secretary Abdurakhim Kaharov, Uzbekistan Presidential Security Council Secretary Viktor Mahmudov, as well as SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov and Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Yevgeny Sysoyev.

President Nazarbayev noted the positive outcome of the previous efforts by SCO members to strengthen economic and political ties. He spoke in detail about specific tasks of the organisation. "This includes coordinated action of the member states in all areas. Currently, the organisation is considering the SCO convention on combating extremism and the SCO declarations on joint efforts against international terrorism. It is necessary to complete the approval of these documents within a short term," Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed. He said that at the Astana Summit, the SCO plans to admit India and Pakistan as full members of the organisation, which will give an additional boost to cooperation in Asia. "It is important to expand SCO's cooperation with international and regional institutions, including the UN, the CSTO and the CICA. We believe it will benefit the organisation," the President said.

The head of state stressed that Kazakhstan, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2017-2018, is making a significant contribution to international peace and security. Specifically, it is involved in the political settlement of the Syrian crisis.

The SCO Secretary-General updated President Nazarbayev on the preparations for the SCO Summit in Astana.
