On 7 July 2023, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming arrived in the Republic of Uzbekistan to coordinate the activities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Observer Mission.
On 5 July 2023, members of the SCO Observer Mission invited by the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan started monitoring preparations for the early presidential elections, scheduled for 9 July 2023.
The Mission includes 22 observers, specifically, representatives of legislative and executive agencies, diplomatic personnel from SCO member states, as well as officials from the SCO Secretariat and the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure.
During their monitoring activities, Mission members are to meet with the top management of the Foreign Ministry and the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as members of district election commissions, active voters, media representatives, and heads and members of monitoring missions from foreign states and international organisations.
