On 20 December 2019, SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov met with Chief of the Chinese Mission of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Giuseppe Crocetti at the SCO Secretariat, at the latter's request.
The officials discussed the SCO's activities regarding illegal migration and the IOM's measures to prevent, identify and investigate human-trafficking crimes. They agreed that human trafficking is a serious problem today.
During the conversation, the officials focused on possible cooperation between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the SCO and the IOM to prevent the trafficking of drugs and weapons.
They also noted that effective cooperation between the border control services and stricter legislation on the prevention of illegal migration could help alleviate the problem in the international arena.
The officials agreed to maintain working contacts in order to explore opportunities for cooperation between the SCO member states and the IOM in combatting human trafficking and illegal migration.
The meeting was held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.
