On 2 November SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov met with Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Hongjoo Hahm, who arrived in Tashkent to participate in the SCO Heads of Government Council Meeting.
During their meeting, they discussed issues pertaining to the gradually developing cooperation between the SCO and ESCAP based on their Memorandum of Understanding.
Vladimir Norov praised their cooperation and underscored that the organisations have considerable potential to expand their joint work in relevant areas related to the development of transport infrastructure and the creation of favourable conditions for implementing international transit corridor projects.
Hongjoo Hahm spoke highly of the SCO's activity as well as the results of the SCO Heads of Government Council Meeting aimed at deepening interaction within the SCO in trade, economic, cultural and educational fields.
In this context, he reaffirmed the ESCAP Secretariat's readiness to continue working with the SCO in all areas of cooperation.
The parties also exchanged opinions on holding themed roundtable discussions and joint activities on current issues on the regional economic agenda.
The UN ESCAP is an SCO partner and one of the UN major regional commissions. Its objective is to resolve economic and social problems in the Asia-Pacific region.
The SCO and ESCAP secretariats signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2005.
