On 27 September SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov had a meeting with UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenča at the UN headquarters in New York.
The SCO Secretary-General emphasised that the SCO's interaction with the United Nations is very important when it comes to combatting international terrorism, regional economic development and cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
Vladimir Norov informed Mr Jenča how much he appreciated the role that the UN Secretariat played in the adoption of a resolution on cooperation between their organisations at the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly thus opening up ample opportunities for taking joint measures with a view to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Assistant Secretary-General said he highly assessed the pace of the development of cooperation between their organisations and pointed out that the objectives of the UN, especially in the context of its reform, include deepening and expansion of its interaction with regional organisations. "The SCO is one of the UN's priority partners in responding to present-day challenges and threats as well as in sustainable socio-economic development," added Mr Jenča.
They also discussed the prospects of more interaction between the SCO and the UN and its specialised agencies, including through joint events. The parties have agreed to continue their working contacts at all levels.
UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča is a career diplomat; he held leading positions in the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was Slovak Ambassador to Mexico, Venezuela and Columbia, represented the Slovak Republic at the EU Political and Security Committee and headed the OSCE mission in Uzbekistan.
In 2008-2015 he was Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and headed the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia based in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
