A panel discussion" Preventive Diplomacy amid the Changing Landscape of Modern Conflicts: the Role of Regional Organisations" was held in the UN Secretariat building, New York, on 19 July 2019.
The event was hosted by the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities with the assistance of the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the UN, and was attended by diplomats from OSCE participating states, as well as representatives of international and regional organisations.
UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca and OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Lamberto Zannier welcomed the participants during the opening of the panel discussion.
Advisor Habib Munir and senior expert Nurali Irzayev took part in the event from the SCO Secretariat.
Mr Munir read a welcoming message by SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov to the participants, which states that maintaining regional security and stability remain key priorities for the SCO.
SCO activities and achievements in confronting modern challenges and threats, terrorism and drug trafficking were covered in detail. Particular emphasis was placed on interaction with the UN and its specialised agencies and other regional organisations. The SCO Secretary-General emphasised the need to promote cooperation in fighting crime in the information and communication spheres.
Support for the efforts of the UN, as a universal multilateral organisation, to maintain international peace and security and promote global development, as well as to promote and protect human rights, was reaffirmed.
The international platform provided an opportunity for the participants to exchange views, in a constructive format, on important matters related to improving coordination and cooperation to today's regional conflicts, with an emphasis on joint preventive activities.
