On 17 May 2019, SCO Secretary-General Vladimir Norov met with UN Under-Secretary-General of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov in Dushanbe.
During the talks they discussed cooperation between the SCO and the UN Counter-Terrorism Office.
In particular, they reaffirmed their shared interest in further consolidating cooperation. The officials agreed to continue close cooperation with the aim of implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and recommendations of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The Secretary-General emphasised the efforts SCO member states are making to implement the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and the importance of fulfilling its four components in a comprehensive and well-balanced manner. He said that, working together for the past 18 years, the SCO member states have developed the necessary legal basis for comprehensive counter-terrorism cooperation both at the political and the practical level within the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure.
They touched on the Declaration of SCO member states at the 62nd session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs on 14 March 2019 which confirmed the relationship between illegal drugs and the threat of terrorism.
They also confirmed the need to expand cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, including joint activities.
The meeting was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
