SCO countries' role in cross-border payments discussed on the sidelines of the financial congress in Almaty

On 15-16 November 2018, Almaty was the venue of the Eighth Congress of Financiers timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the introduction of Kazakhstan's national currency: the tenge.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev sent a message of greetings to the congress.

The congress was attended by senior officials from over 20 European, Asian and US national banks, including the central banks' governors of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member countries (China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia,Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) and the "SCO family:" Mongolia, Belarus and Armenia.

International financial institutes were represented by the IMF, the Eurasian Development Bank and the Interstate Bank among others.

Those taking part at the congress discussed today's challenges on the financial markets, using money globally, economic security and other topical matters. Financial experts also touched upon using national currencies in the future in cross-border payments as well as developing mutual availability to national currency markets for SCO member countries including those along the One Belt One Road initiative.

The congress was attended by SCO Deputy Secretary-General Nurlan Akkoshkarov.
