The SCO Model-2018 international youth conference, part of the SCO Youth Assembly work programme, started on 9 November 2018. Students and postgraduates from SCO member countries, observer states and dialogue partners are taking part in the event. Each of the 18 participants is a finalist of the contest among 300 of their peers who won vouchers to Dongfang.
Is it possible to simulate the activity of such a multifaceted transregional organisation as the SCO? Future diplomats and politicians think that it is and are carrying out thorough discussions on situational models for the establishment of state-to-state interaction, taking into account the current SCO practices. The SCO Model conference helps them gain the experience of being involved in the development of consensual solutions aimed at the joint provision of regional security and stability, long-term sustainable development as well as deeper cultural and humanitarian ties.
"The organisers came up with an interesting format, which made us absorb ourselves in both the theory and practice of contemporary international cooperation. You won't find such things in textbooks," explained Beketay Artykbayev, a conference participant from Kyrgyzstan.
Those at the conference focused on the simulation of the process of a search for balanced collective solutions in combatting terrorism and extremism on the basis of consensus. Sarvar Ismailov, a student from Tajikistan said: "I'm taking part for the first time at the SCO Model conference. It seems to me that it helped me get to know some of the secrets regarding complicated diplomatic work. I also had an opportunity to learn more about current international relations, especially when it comes to the fight against international terrorism and extremism. I have gained a lot of knowledge and this event without a doubt has been a very valuable experience."
"Such conferences provide a unique possibility to feel just like a diplomat. All the young people here were prepared very thoroughly and displayed a high level of expertise and profound knowledge. All our discussions were very interesting and useful for understanding where the SCO stands and its role in the modern world, pointed out Zun Akhmed Khan, an Assembly participant from Pakistan.
Young people at the conference focused on the prevention of terrorist and extremist ideology spreading among young people and the attempts of destructive forces to involve the youth in criminal activities of terrorist and extremist organisations.
"We oppose any types of intolerance, aggression or denial of traditional fundamentals of ethics and morality. We want the SCO youngsters to join efforts against involving young people into terrorist and extremist groups," said Victoria Hu, an activist of the SCO youth movement.
The SCO Model-2018 conference has become a key part of the activities on the SCO Youth Assembly programme. The Assembly is being held in the Chinese City of Dongfang on Hainan Island. Over 300 young people from the SCO family countries are involved in its work.
