Between 27 and 30 July 2018 the SCO Observer Mission has been working in the Kingdom of Cambodia at the invitation of the Cambodian Government to monitor the preparations for and the holding of elections to the country's National Assembly (lower house of parliament).
The SCO Mission is chaired by SCO Deputy Secretary-General Ambassador Wang Kaiwen.
The mission is headquartered in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, where it plans to visit at least 75 electoral districts.
On the first day of its work in Cambodia, SCO Mission Chair Wang Kaiwen met with the leader of the ruling party and Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen, President of the Senate Say Chhum, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Sar Kheng. The officials discussed ways of interaction and the operating procedure of the international observers during the preparations of the elections and on the actual election day.
The Mission operates under the SCO Regulations on the SCO Observer Mission at Presidential and/or Parliamentary Elections and Referendums, which the SCO Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs approved on 15 May 2006.
