On June 9, 2018, SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov met with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in Qingdao.
Mr Alimov expressed his deep gratitude for the distinguished guest's participation in the meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council. "This is yet another confirmation of the fact that strong and effective links between the UN and regional organisations make them stronger, and also significantly strengthen the UN itself," he said.
Amina Mohammed conveyed the greetings from the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and noted the important role of the SCO in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Rashid Alimov talked in detail about the preparations for the SCO summit in Qingdao, shared his assessments of the state and prospects for the development of cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and the UN Secretariat and its other specialised agencies. The SCO Secretary-General spoke highly of the working contacts supported by the UN Department of Political Affairs, highlighted the successful interaction with the UNODC on the anti-drug track, a productive start with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, and effective economic cooperation with UN ESCAP.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the upcoming signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the SCO and UNESCO, a comprehensive document formalising the relationship and defining specific areas of cooperation in education, science and culture.
They exchanged views on the status and prospects of cooperation between the two organisations on the basis of the Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the UN and SCO Secretariats signed in 2010, and on other issues of mutual interest.
